OEIB management subcommittee recommends Dr. Nancy Golden as Interim Chief Education Officer
(Salem, OR) — Governor Kitzhaber today announced the Management Subcommittee of the Oregon Education Investment Board has voted to recommend to the full board that Dr. Nancy Golden serve as Interim Chief Education Officer.
"I appreciate the OEIB Management Subcommittee recommendation that Nancy Golden serve as interim Chief Education Officer and look forward to the full board's consideration of her appointment next week," said Governor Kitzhaber. "Nancy has been deeply involved from the start in our efforts to improve student outcomes in Oregon. Her leadership would ensure that we don't miss a beat during this transition and that we continue our strong progress in building a world class education system. I support her appointment and expect a robust discussion with the full board at its meeting on Monday."
The Chief Education Officer oversees Oregon's entire system of public education – from early learning through K-12 and college and career training. The position was created as part of a set of sweeping education reforms made during the 2011 and 2012 legislative sessions to ensure all Oregon students reach the state's 40-40-20 goals. For the first time, state and local education funding and governance are aligned to deliver better results for students and more resources for educators. The Chief Education Officer reports to the Oregon Education Investment Board, which is chaired by the Governor.
Dr. Golden brings more than 30 years experience in the education sector. She currently serves as alternate chair of OEIB and recently retired as Superintendent of Springfield Public Schools. She served as Governor Kitzhaber's Education Policy Advisor in 2011 and previously directed the University of Oregon's Administrative Licensure Program.
Over the last year, Dr. Golden worked with The Chalkboard Project to lead TeachOregon, an initiative to develop and pilot innovative models of teacher preparation. Ensuring new teachers are coming into Oregon classrooms prepared to meet the needs of all students is essential work, and Dr. Golden will continue her involvement with this initiative if appointed.
The full Oregon Education Investment Board will meet on Monday July 1, 2013, at 1:00 pm to consider the recommendation.
