Yesterday, Governor Tina Kotek hosted an event commemorating the signing of Senate Bill 243, known as the Community Safety Firearms Act. The bill bans rapid-fire devices, which turn rifles and handguns into weapons of mass casualty. The bill also strengthens protections in public spaces by clarifying where firearms can or cannot be carried.
“The Community Safety Firearms Act is now law in Oregon,” Governor Kotek said. “This matters to every parent dropping their kid off at school. It matters to everyone who deserves to feel safe in their own neighborhood. It matters because gun violence is preventable. And we’re proving it.”
The event included supporters and advocates of Senate Bill 243, including representatives from Moms Demand Action, Alliance for Gun Safety, and Everytown for Gun Safety. Also joining the ceremonial signing were State Senator Anthony Broadman (D-Bend) and State Representative April Dobson (D-Happy Valley).
