Governor Kitzhaber congratulates Oregon’s 2014 Winter Olympians
Salem, OR — Governor Kitzhaber sent his congratulations and support today to Oregonians competing in the XXII Olympic Winter Games, which officially open tomorrow in Sochi, Russia. Laurenne Ross from Bend and Jacqueline Wiles of Aurora will compete on behalf of the United States, joining a roster of 230 American athletes.
“Laurenne and Jacqueline have shown the athleticism and dedication it takes to compete and win on the world stage,” said Governor Kitzhaber. “They are outstanding examples to young athletes here at home, and I know people across the state will join me in cheering on Oregon's champions.”
Ms. Ross will compete in the Alpine skiing events Super G and Super Combined. Ms. Wiles, also an Alpine skier, will compete in Downhill and Super G. Governor Kitzhaber also sent his congratulations to Bend-based Kent Callister, who has dual citizenship with Australia and will be representing that country in the snowboard half-pipe.
The XXII Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony will be held on Friday, February 7. All Team USA athletes will be outfit in opening ceremony sweaters made from wool from Imperial Stock Ranch near Maupin. “This is one more way Oregon is represented at the Olympics – in high quality materials produced by one of our family farms,” said Governor Kitzhaber.
