Language Assistance Available to all Voters
Currently, most Oregon elections materials are available in English and Spanish only. If an eligible voter speaks a different language, it’s important they know that there are resources available to help them exercise their right to vote. In Oregon, 15% of residents speak a language other than English at home. (http://sos.oregon.gov/voting/Pages/voteinor.aspx#registertovote)
This post will address all the ways voters whose primary language is not English can get help.
First, let’s talk about registration. Registration is available on paper and online in English and Spanish. If an eligible voter speaks a language other than those, they are welcome to call the Elections Division at 1-866-673-8683 and free interpretation will be provided for you to help the voter fill out their form. A voter can also seek help from anyone they trust, as long as they’re making their own decisions on the ballot.
Ballots, which are mailed to voters’ homes, are only printed in English. However, it is legal for an eligible voter to get help from their family, friends, neighbors – anyone except their employer or union, if they are a member of one.
Local elections offices also stand by to help. Some may have staffers who speak languages other than English, or they may be able to contact an interpreter – free of charge – to help.
If a non-English speaking voter isn’t able to find help in their community, they are encouraged to call us at the Elections Division at 866-673-8683. Free interpretation services can be provided.
