All sources that discharge waste to surface waters in Oregon, must obtain a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. Sources not eligible for a general permit must apply for an individual permit. Sources that discharge waste into a sewerage system do not have to obtain an NPDES permit provided that the owner of the sewerage system has a valid permit, but these sources may be subject to municipal pretreatment requirements.
