Treasurer Steiner Praises Supreme Court Ruling Striking Down Trump Administration Tariffs

Oregon Treasurer Elizabeth Steiner welcomed today’s United States Supreme Court ruling that struck down tariffs the Trump administration imposed on nearly all trading partners, citing “emergency powers.”

In a statement Treasurer Steiner said:

I applaud today’s Supreme Court ruling that struck down the administration’s costly tariffs, which have raised prices for Oregonians and made it harder for many Oregon businesses to compete, costing jobs and harming the state economy. This ruling was a long overdue check on the administration’s misuse of its emergency powers and the damaging impact its failed economic policies are having on households in Oregon and across the United States.

Over the past year, the administration’s tariffs have cost the average household $1,700, at a time when 1 in 2 Oregonians are struggling to put aside even $500 for emergencies. A recent study by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City found that tariffs cost Americans nearly 20,000 jobs per month.

I want to thank Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield and his team for Oregon’s national leadership in challenging the administration’s illegal actions.

I urge the White House to abandon its costly tariffs once and for all. Businesses and consumers in our state and across the nation need lower costs and more job opportunities. Oregonians cannot afford to bear the financial cost of these financially devastating and legally suspect actions any longer.
