Wilsonville contractor issued $24,498 penalty by DEQ for asbestos work
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued a $24,498 civil penalty to Columbia Construction Services, Inc., for performing asbestos abatement without a license and for openly accumulating asbestos-containing waste material at the site of a commercial building renovation located at 25195 SW Parkway, Wilsonville, OR. Additionally, DEQ cited the company, without penalty, for failing to conduct an asbestos survey prior to performing the project.
DEQ issued the penalty because the remodeling work conducted by the company could have released asbestos fibers into the air, exposing workers and the public to asbestos fibers, which are a known respiratory hazard.
The efforts of the company to minimize the effects of the violation by hiring a licensed asbestos abatement contractor to properly abate the openly accumulated asbestos-containing waste was considered when determining the amount of civil penalty.
