Grant County households and small businesses can dispose of a variety of hazardous wastes at a collection event April 1-2 at the Grant County Road Department, 27941 Lower Yard Road in John Day.
The first day of the event is for small businesses and takes place from 3 to 5 p.m. on Friday, April 1. Small businesses located in Grant County may qualify for a significantly reduced fee if the business generates less than 220 pounds or ½ drum monthly (equivalent to about five drums or 2200 pounds annually). Small businesses must pre-register by March 18, 2016 by calling Lisa Mattila at (503) 742-7109 or by e-mail at mattila.lisa@cleanharbors.com.
The second day of the event is for households and takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 2. The event is free for households and common collection items include paint products, aerosol cans, antifreeze, engine cleaners, fluorescent tubes, herbicides, household batteries, motor oil, solvents, weed killers and pesticides.
These items should be kept in their original containers if possible. Please do not bring explosives or items that contain radioactive waste, such as smoke detectors.
Most households contain some amount of hazardous materials, and it is very important that residents properly dispose of these items to avoid a health or environmental hazard. Improper disposal can contaminate our water or air. This material can also threaten sanitation workers who can be burned or poisoned.
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and Grant County are sponsoring the event.
