DEQ to hold public hearing on Georgia-Pacific water quality permit
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality will hold a public hearing Jan. 30 on a proposal to renew Georgia-Pacific Toledo LLC’s water quality permit.
The hearing will be held at 6 p.m. at the Newport Public Library, McEntee Room, 35 NW Nye St.
DEQ is proposing to renew the company’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Permit for its Toledo facility, a pulp and paper mill that produces cardboard products. The water quality permit allows it to discharge treated process water from the facility into the Pacific Ocean. Wastewater from the manufacturing process is treated in lagoons on site before being discharged. The outfall pipe runs about 4,000 feet offshore from Nye Beach.
DEQ will accept written and oral comments on the proposal at the hearing. DEQ is accepting written comments on the proposal through 5 p.m. on Feb. 8.
