The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality issued a $2,428 penalty to Niswonger-Reynolds, LLC for cremating 20 tons or more of material between 2012 and 2015 without the appropriate permit. The company operates a crematory incinerator at 105 NW Irving Street in Bend. The company operated under a Basic Air Contaminant Discharge Permit, which limits cremated material to 20 tons annually. Cremating more material, as the company did between 2012 and 2015, requires a General Air Contaminant Discharge Permit. Niswonger-Reynolds applied for and was granted such a permit in August 2016, which allows cremated material to exceed 20 tons annually. The company paid the penalty.
