DEQ issues $14,000 penalty to Portland contractor for asbestos work
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued a $14,000 civil penalty to Nuvo Construction LLC, for performing asbestos abatement without a license and for openly accumulating asbestos-containing waste material at a residential remodel site located at 5714 SE Lincoln St., Portland, OR. Additionally, DEQ cited the company, without penalty, for failing to notify DEQ prior to the start of an asbestos abatement project and for disposing of asbestos-containing waste at an unauthorized location.
DEQ issued the penalty because the remodeling work conducted by the company could have released asbestos fibers into the air, exposing workers and the public to asbestos fibers, which are a known respiratory hazard.
The efforts of the company to minimize the effects of the violation by promptly hiring a licensed asbestos abatement contractor to properly abate the openly accumulated asbestos-containing waste was considered when determining the amount of civil penalty.
