The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued a $10,800 civil penalty to Freedom Fisheries, LLC, for causing oil to enter the Skipanon River from the company’s fishing vessel, the Anne Marie, which was moored in the Warrenton Marina in Warrenton, OR. On January 14, 2016, the vessel’s crew released approximately one gallon of oily bilge water into the Skipanon River. The company also failed to report the spill to Oregon Emergency Response System per state law. DEQ issued the penalty because the spilling of petroleum products into state waters has a harmful environmental impact on aquatic life and ecosystems. The spilling of oil into waters of the state is a violation of Oregon environmental law.
