DEQ fines TDY Industries LLC for hazardous waste violations
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has fined TDY Industries $43,353 for hazardous waste violations including failing to determine waste was hazardous, storing hazardous waste without a hazardous waste storage facility permit and allowing hazardous waste to be shipped without a hazardous waste manifest.
In July 2011 the company received 40 55-gallon drums of zirconium swarf -- fine particles that are a byproduct of sawing or grinding operations – at its Millersburg facility. The company didn’t identify the waste as hazardous and illegally stored it on site without the proper permit.
In December 2011, TDY Industries shipped the drums to WTI/Heritage Inc.’s industrial and hazardous waste treatment facility in East Liverpool, Ohio. Federal and state laws require hazardous waste shipments to have uniform hazardous waste manifests identifying the type and quantity of waste being transported, and signature lines for all parties involved in the generation, transportation, and disposal of hazardous wastes.
The company has until June 12, 2016 to appeal the penalty.
