DEQ fines Fern Ridge Self Storage for stormwater violations
Post Featured Image
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has fined Fern Ridge Self Storage $4,368 for failing to implement erosion and sediment controls resulting in the discharge of significant amounts of sediment at its construction site and outside its boundaries. The company’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System stormwater permit requires it to control runoff on the site and to conduct visual monitoring inspections to ensure controls on the site are effective. On Jan. 11, 2018, a DEQ inspector observed muddy water overflowing from an unprotected stockpile and flowing into the stormwater collection system. The inspector also observed the sediment-laden stormwater discharging from the site. When it reaches waterways sediment can block light from submerged vegetation. This can kill plants and lower oxygen in waterways, harming fish and other aquatic life. The company has until May 23 to appeal the fine.
