DEQ fines Eagle Star Rock Products for stormwater violations
Post Featured Image
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has fined Eagle Star Rock Products LLC $4,200 for diverting stormwater from its St. Helens Hankey Road Quarry into Perry Creek. Stormwater runoff from the quarry can be muddy, or turbid, and poses a threat to fish and other aquatic life when discharged directly into local waterways. Turbid stormwater can clog fish gills, prevent egg and larvae development, reduce photosynthesis in plants and increase the temperature of the water. Perry Creek flows into Milton Creek, which is habitat for endangered salmon and steelhead and other sensitive species. An inspector from the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries discovered the violation during a site inspection in September 2017. Eagle Star Rock Products has taken steps to correct the violation and has until June 14 to complete restoration of the area.
