DEQ extends grant application deadline to Oct. 30, $600,000 available for projects that promote waste prevention, reuse or recovery
There is additional time to apply for up to $600,000 in grants for projects that promote waste prevention, reuse or recovery. Due to the severe wildfires across the state, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality extended the application deadline from Friday, Oct. 2 to Friday, Oct. 30.
Grant criteria is tailored to benefit a wide range of Oregon communities. DEQ is looking for innovative projects that reduce impacts across the full life cycle of materials and products. The life cycle of materials and products includes product design, raw material extraction, manufacturing, transport, consumption, use, reuse, repair, recovery through recycling, composting or anaerobic digestion and disposal. Every year, DEQ includes “focus points” to bolster the state’s efforts around specific projects or agency initiatives.
This year’s focus points align with DEQ’s efforts to help organizations affected by COVID-19 and/or support historically marginalized communities. While the focus points will help elevate certain projects, they are in no way intended to discourage other applications who may not qualify for these points. DEQ looks to fund a wide array of projects that reflect both project and geographic diversity. Small businesses, nonprofit organizations, local governments, and federally-recognized tribal nations are encouraged to apply. Funding for projects that prevent wasted food is also available to public schools, colleges and universities.
In 2019, DEQ prioritized projects that involved partnerships with community-based organizations, and received more than 50 competitive applications. Out of those applications, DEQ granted nearly $600,000 in funding to 17 organizations.
Grant applications and instructions are available here.
Deadline for applications is Friday, Oct. 30 at 11:59 p.m. PDT
