Burns, Ore. — The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, Harney County and the City of Burns are hosting a free household hazardous waste collection event on Saturday April 26th, in the parking lot of Erickson’s Thriftway, 13011 Hwy 20, Burns, OR.
Residents from Burns and the surrounding area are encouraged to bring common household hazardous waste items, including aerosol cans, antifreeze, engine cleaners, fluorescent tubes, household batteries, motor oil, paint, pesticides (e.g., herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, etc.), solvents, mercury-containing devices (e.g., thermostats or silver-colored thermometers) and wood preservatives. Waste must fit in containers that do not exceed 5 gallons in volume. If possible, items should be kept in their original containers and transported with care.
Items that cannot be accepted at the event include explosives, asbestos, ammunition or products that contain radioactive waste, such as many smoke detectors.

Special instructions:
- Items must be grouped in boxes or sturdy containers. Do Not put items in plastic bags.
- Avoid direct contact with debris that was in contaminated floodwaters. Always wear waterproof gloves and wash your hands often with hot water and soap to prevent illness.
- Materials will not be collected from passenger seats. All materials must be placed in trunk, SUV cargo area or truck bed. If materials are not in these locations, you will be asked to leave the line and move them.
- Keep products in original containers when possible.
- Batteries can be disposed of at Les Schwab, 179 Hines Blvd., Burns or NAPA Auto Parts, 402 W. Monroe St., Burns
