Description

Physical Therapists are licensed pursuant to ORS 688.010 to 688.201 to practice physical therapy.

The Practice of Physical Therapy means: (a) Examining, evaluating and testing for mechanical, physiological and developmental impairments, functional limitations and disabilities or other neuromusculoskeletal conditions in order to determine a physical therapy diagnosis or prognosis or a plan of physical therapy intervention and to assess the ongoing effects of physical therapy intervention; (b) Alleviating impairments and functional limitations by designing, implementing, administering and modifying physical therapy interventions; (c) Reducing the risk of injury, impairment, functional limitation and disability by physical therapy interventions that may include as a component the promotion and maintenance of health, fitness and quality of life in all age populations. (d) Consulting or providing educational services to a patient for the purposes of paragraphs (a), (b) and (c) of this section.

Duration

Up to 2 years, expires March 31st of even years.

Renewal Information

Physical Therapist Licenses expire on March 31st of even numbered years, regardless of when they are initially issued. Licensees must complete an online renewal, provide proof of continuing competency, and pay renewal fees.

Processing Time

Processing Time Description
1-3 Days Applications are typically processed 1-3 business days after all components of the application have been received, including documentation from other agencies or organizations (i.e. transcripts, exam results, background check results, etc.)

Prerequisites and Requirements

Prerequisites

Applicants for licensure must:

1)Be at least 18 years of age.
2) Be of good moral character as determined by the Board.
3) Have graduated from a CAPTE Accredited school of physical therapy. If the applicant graduated from a Non-CAPTE Accredited school, they must complete an educational credentials review that finds their education to be equivalent.
4) Be in good standing in every state where currently or previously licensed.
5) Have passed the National Physical Therapist Exam (NPTE) and the Oregon Jurisprudence Assessment Module (OR-JAM)
6) Complete the Oregon Pain Commission's Pain Management Module.
7) Complete a Criminal Background Check.

Examination Information

Applicants must have passed both the National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE) and the Oregon Jurisprudence Assessment Module (OR-JAM).

Continuing Education Requirements

Physical Therapists must complete 24 hours of continuing competency each 24 month period, beginning April 1 of even years through March 31 of the following even year. Licensees will not be allowed to renew their license until the Board receives proof of continuing competency credits.
