Description
A person who has been certified by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) as meeting the requirements to provide instruction to private security providers or applicants.

Prerequisites and Requirements
Prerequisites
Must have three years full-time work experience in the private security, military police, or law enforcement fields and meet the minimum age requirements. All instructor applicants must submit a resume with your application materials and clearly show your education, work experience, and qualifications. A firearms instructor must have completed a instructor development course that consists of a minimum of 40 hours. The course must have been successfully completed within the five years prior to application. Proof of successful completion is required. Approved sources include:
(i) The Handgun Instructor Development Course provided by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training;
(ii) The Washington Criminal Justice Training Center;
(iii) The National Rifle Association Law Enforcement Instructor Development School;
(iv) The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center;
(v) The Federal Bureau of Investigation; or
(vi) A qualified firearms instructor certification course as determined by the Department.
Examination Information
Exam information is provided by staff after successful completion of an instructor course.
Continuing Education Requirements
At time of renewal must provide proof of at least 8 hours of refresher coursework relating to any of the specific subjects being taught or generally improving instructor skills was obtained. This applies to each instructor certification held.
